Meet Gina Andrews

Gina Andrews first discovered a lump when she was 28 years of age. After having the lump examined, she was told by her doctors that it was benign. Three years later, she welcomed her first child. During the pregnancy, the same lump increased in size. She brought the concern to her obstetrician. This time a biopsy was performed. Six days after her son was born, she was told she had breast cancer at the age of 31 years old. She immediately undergone eight rounds of chemotherapy treatments, surgery, and another year of treatments.

Gina Andrews was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, when she was 31, six days after delivering her first child. She endured eight rounds of chemotherapy, major surgery, and then an additional six rounds of chemotherapy, all while raising her infant son and come to grips with what has happened to her.

Throughout this ordeal, Andrews discovered there were limited resources for young women battling this disease, specifically for those under the age of 40. She found that a lot of women felt overwhelmed at the lack of resources available regionally. This inspired her to create and run the nonprofit organization, Sacramento Breast Cancer Resource Center in 2007, which served as an outlet center for women to receive hope, support, and any number of resources as they battled the disease.

Andrews’ reputation and determination to make a difference was paramount in receiving a grant from Susan G. Komen to fund the “Young Awareness Program.”  Along the way, Andrews became an advocate of inspiration and strength. In recent months, she has been profiled on three local television news segments, which brought additional exposure to resource centers and fundraising events, which Andrews helped create and coordinate. She also made television appearances to speak about the importance of early breast cancer detection. Andrews has been asked in recent years by local politicians to testify at the State Capital on behalf of the breast cancer health care bill. In November 2009, Andrews was honored in Atlanta as one of eight regional Pink Power Mom breast cancer winners.

Today, Andrews strives to promote early breast cancer detection, bring awareness to young women, and raise funds to donate to charities that provide breast cancer services through her new company, SaveRBoobies.

To help spread awareness in young women, she speaks and shares her story at woman’s groups, business groups, church groups, and at events.
